Barnevelders originated in the district of Barneveld, Holland. There were originally mixed colors, but eventually the double laced version was standardized and is still popular in Holland. Barnevelder chicks have dark brown heads and a dark brown streak down the back with two lighter brown streaks on each side. The wing tips and abdomen are light brown. They have single combs and clean, yellow legs and feet. The adult plumage pattern is known as double laced partridge. The males head, neck, tail covert and saddle feathers are black with reddish brown edging and black tip. The wing bow, covert, breast and back feathers are reddish brown with greenish black lacing. The main tail is black, and the lesser sickles are greenish black. The thigh, body and fluff plumage are black. The females head and neck are greenish black, while the main tail, body and fluff plumage is black.
