RIW were developed around 1900 from crosses that included Partridge Cochins, White Wyandottes and Rose Comb White Leghorns. They aren’t as well-known as Rhode Island Reds, but female RIW are used to produce the very popular Gold Star layers. RIW chicks are solid yellow or cream with some having slightly darker heads. They have single combs and clean, yellow legs and feet. All the adult plumage is white, with the comb, wattles and ear lobes being bright red.
